Three Great Italian Restaurants in the Bay Area, California
Bertolucci’s Ristorante has a long history in South San Francisco. Bertolucci’s was a boarding house that catered to the steel workers. Mama Bertolucci whipped up family style meals that started to get a reputation. People from all over the Bay Area started coming for her famous meals. When she was ready to retire, Mama Bertolucci gave her business to her daughter, Lola and son, Larry where they ran the business until 2003.
One of the biggest fans of Bertolucci’s Ristorante was Peter Sodini. As a child he worked in his father’s bakery and delivered bread to Bertolucci’s. Peter eventually grew up and started Golden Boy Pizza in 1978 in San Francisco. Along with his family they opened several Golden Boy Pizza restaurants around the area. He and his wife eventually bought Green Valley Restaurant in North Beach where they restored an old building and is still a popular place to this day.
When Peter saw that Bertolucci’s was up for sale, he jumped on the opportunity to purchase it. Serving traditional Italian meals, they have garnered over five hundred and fifty positive reviews online.
Ristorante Buon Gusto was opened in 1988 by Vincenzo and his friend Carmelo. Vincenzo hails from Porto San Giorgio which is in the Marche region of Italy. South San Francisco had a large Italian community that welcomed their restaurant from the beginning. It is still in its original place at 224 Grande Avenue. There are still many Italian families in South San Francisco who have made Ristorante Buon Gusto on of their favorite places to eat. Vincenzo uses the Italian Proverb; Chi mangia bene vive bene which translates to; he who east well, lives well.
They have over three hundred and fifty reviews on the internet. These reviews rave not only about the service but the authentic Italian atmosphere. Vincenzo tries to use as many local vendors as possible to help support the community.

He studied under some of Italy’s most famous chefs before venturing to California in 2011. He and his wife had a dream of opening an Italian restaurant and spent quite some time in the Bay Area looking for the perfect location. They found it in the Rockridge neighborhood of Oakland.
